Higher-study options for pharmacy graduates

There are many higher-study options available for meritorious pharmacy graduates. After B.Pharm., you can go in for M.Tech. (Pharm.), MBA (Pharm.) or MS (Pharm.).

NIPER courses
The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Sector 67, SAS Nagar, Mohali - 160 062, Punjab (http://www.niper.nic.in,/ http://www.niper.ac.in/) , offers good study facilities for meritorious pharmacy graduates. Specialised subjects available for MS (Pharm.) programmes are medical chemistry, natural products, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics, biotechnology and pharmaco informatics.
Other programmes include M.Pharm. - pharmaceutical technology (formulations), pharmacy practice; M.Tech. (Pharm) - pharmaceutical technology (bulk drugs), and MBA (Pharm) - pharmaceutical management.

B.Pharm. graduates with 60 per cent marks are eligible to apply for all the above programmes. SC/ ST students require only 55 per cent marks and physically handicapped students require only 50 per cent marks in B.Pharm. Applicants should also qualify GATE/NET. Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, conducts M.Pharm. (Pharmaceutics / quality assurance / pharmacognosy) course. M.Sc. M.Tech. (Biotechnology) programme offered at Anna University, Chennai;

West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata (First class B.Pharm. holders are eligible for admission) selection is through all-India-level combined biotechnology entrance examination conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University every year.

Rajeev Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Gandhi Nagar, Bhopal - 462 036 (http://www.rgtu.net/) , offers M.Tech. (Biotechnology), M.Pharm (Pharma chemistry/pharmaceutics). Pharmacy graduates are eligible for admission.

M.Tech in Bioinformatics/IT is offered by the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad - 211 012 (http://www.iiita.ac.in/) . GATE qualified pharmacy graduates are eligible for admission.

IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036 (http://www.biotech.iitm.ac.in/) , provides opportunities to study M.Tech. Medical Biotechnology (under user-oriented programme). B.Pharm. holders with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Selection is through a written test and interview.
IIT Bombay, conducts an MS.c. Biotechnology programme. Pharmaceutical graduates are also eligible. Selection is through Joint Admission Test (JAM) for M.Sc. conducted by IIT at the national level.

IIT Kharagpur also provides an M.Tech. level course for GATE qualified pharmacy graduates (www.iitkgp.ernet.in/mtech) .

Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad - 826 004, offers an MBA programme for B.Tech./ B.Pharm. degree holders with 55 per cent marks. Selection is through IIM-CAT score, group discussion and interview.

The Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences under Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jam Nagar - 8 (http://www.iaps.ac.in/) , offers Master of Pharmacy (Ayurveda) and M.Sc. (Medical Plants) programmes. Graduates in pharmacy are eligible for admission.

Mar Athanasius College for Advanced Studies, Tiruvalla - 689 101, (http://www.macfast.org/) , has introduced an M.Sc. Phytomedical Sciences and Technology course. B.Pharm. degree holders with 55 per cent marks also eligible for admission.

Career in pharmacology
In Kerala

In Kerala, College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, provides excellent study facilities for M.Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacognosy and Phyto-chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharma Practice and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Those who have passed B.Pharm with minimum 55 per cent marks in all the four years taken together are eligible for admission.

The admission will be notified by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. Final year B.Pharm. students who are appearing for the final examination are also eligible to write the entrance test. Duration of the M.Pharm. course is two years.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cheruvandoor, under The School of Medical Education, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, offers an M.Pharm. course. Number of seats is five. Entry qualification is B.Pharm. with not less than 60 per cent marks for all the four years. Relaxation of 5per cent marks is permitted for SC/ ST students. Merit list will be prepared on the basis of 50 per cent B.Pharm. marks in percentage and 50 per cent as valid GATE score percentile. Graduates without GATE score will be considered in case of non-availability of GATE qualified applicants. College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Karnataka - 576 119, under the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, conducts M.Pharm. in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Marketing, Pharmacy Administration, Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Entry qualification is B.Pharm. with 55 per cent aggregate marks.

Goa College of Pharmacy, Panaji, conducts M.Pharm. Quality Assurance, Pharmacology. Those who posses B.Pharm. with 55 per cent marks and GATE score are eligible for admission.

Other suitable higher-study options for meritorious pharmacy graduates are biotechnology, bioinformatics postgraduate programmes and MBA. Go by your aptitude and interest while choosing a course.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, offers M.Tech. Medical Biotechnology under a user-oriented programme. First class B.Pharm. graduates with valid GATE/CSIR - UGC/CMR/ICAR score are eligible for admission. Selection is based on written test and interview conducted by IIT, Madras (http://www.biotech.iitm.ac.in/ ).

MBA programmes Meritorious pharmacy graduates are also eligible for admission to any MBA programme. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, conducts a two-year full-time MBA programme with a focus on management systems. B.Pharm. holders with 60 per cent marks are eligible for admission. M.Tech. (Biotechnology) programmes are offered at Anna University, Chennai, and West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, for which first class B.Pharm holders are eligible for admission. Selection is through a national-level combined entrance test conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, every year.

is another suitable higher-study option for pharmacy graduates.

Meritorious Pharmacy graduates are also eligible for MBA Pharmaceutical Management conducted by the School of Business Management, under the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and Higher studies, (Deemed University), V.L. Mehta Road, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai - 400 056. The School of Pharmacy and Technology Management under this institute (NMIMS) also conducts M.Pharm. Under Calicut University, St.Mary's College, Thrissur (girl students only), St. Joseph's College Irinjalakuda (girls only) and SAFI Institute of Advanced Studies, Vazhayur, Malappuram, conduct M.Sc. General Biotechnology. The SAFI Institute of Advanced Studies also conducts an M.Sc. Bioinformatics programme. Pharmacy graduates with 55 per cent marks are eligible for admission. Admission is based on common entrance test conducted by the University of Calicut.

Pharmacy graduates can also qualify GATE and become eligible for scholarship for higher studies. GATE notification can be expected in September every year.

Job prospects
India is fast becoming a leading player in the global pharmaceutical sector. So plenty of opportunities will be in the offing and good students will be able to find jobs abroad. M.Pharm. and Ph.D. holders are in great demand in different fields of pharmaceutical research and development. Quality control and quality assurance are the important areas of the drug and pharmaceutical industry where highly qualified pharmacy professionals are required. Those with M.Pharm. and Ph.D. in Pharm. Analysing / Quality Assurance are preferred for these jobs.
Pharma marketing offers excellent opportunities for the smart pharmacy graduates and MBA (Pharma) degree holders. B.Pharm. holders can work as medical sales representatives.

Hospitals and medical shops provide job opportunities for qualified candidates as well. M.Pharm. and Ph.D. holders can also opt for a teaching career. Jobs such as those of drug inspectors, drug controllers, etc. are also options for those who have taken the pharmacy stream.
